Dyson Vacuum Cleaners - The Dirty Truth

James Dyson, the CEO and founder of Dyson is probably most famous for his companies vacuum cleaners. His passion for design led innovation has resulted in his company enjoying the kind of fame and admiration rarely given to a manufacturer of domestic products. In this article I will take a look at some of the clever features and inventions built into the Dyson vacuum.

Dyson vacuum cleaners were borne out of James Dyson's conviction that there must be a way of overcoming the short comings of the cleaners that existed in the pre-Dyson era.

Bags in vacuum cleaners were not easy to empty satisfactorily and were not ever lasting. The tiny holes in the bags would inevitably become clogged with dust particles resulting in gradual loss of suction. The filters in these old machines were often made of paper and so they to had to be replaced. A belt linked the electric motor to the mechanism that generated the suction and after a while it snapped, another replacement needed.

Along came James Dyson like the consumers white knight and addressed all these problems by taking a completely new approach. Bags were discarded and replaced with a transparent, tough polycarbonate bin that never needs replacing and is easy to empty and keep clean. Filters became washable and made to last the lifetime of the vacuum.

Dyson vacuum cleaners owe their success to, above all else, the quite extraordinary patented Root Cyclone Technology. This spins the air with a centrifugal force that is many thousands of times greater than that of gravity itself. This enables everything that the cleaner picks up, dust, dirt and pet hairs to be driven directly into the bin without any loss of suction. So powerful is this system that particles as tiny as 1/5,000's of a pinhead, equal to about 0.5 microns, are captured and that means mold spores, dust mites and pollens do not escape the sucking power of the mighty cyclone. Indeed this important aspect of the Dyson's technology has resulted in some of their machines, for example the DC33, being certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Owners of Dyson vacuum cleaners benefit from not only the technological advances that I have mentioned above but in other ways that make the Dyson machines a wise investment.

They are tough, very tough, indeed so confident are Dyson of the strength and durability of their vacuums that most come with a five year free parts and labor warranty. A welcome change in a world where extending a products warranty for more than as little as a year can be a an expensive business.

When engineers and designers concentrate on improving the functionality of a product, whether it be a bridge, an aircraft or a vacuum cleaner, a side benefit is often that the item itself becomes attractive or even beautiful. Consider a bridge by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the supersonic aircraft Concorde and a James Dyson Vacuum cleaner.
